Northwestern Wins 2025 NCAA Field Hockey Championship in Double Overtime
Durham, N.C. — Northwestern claimed the 2025 NCAA Field Hockey Championship with a dramatic 2–1 double-overtime win over Princeton at Duke’s Jack Katz Stadium.
Princeton took the lead in the third quarter on a penalty-corner goal from Beth Yeager, putting the Tigers in control during a tight, defensive match. Northwestern kept pressing and finally broke through in the fourth quarter, converting on a penalty corner to tie the game 1–1 and force overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, Northwestern ended it just 14 seconds into the second. On a well-executed penalty corner, Ashley Sessa sent the insert to Maddie Zimmer, who set up Ilse Tromp for the deflection that sealed the championship.
The win gives Northwestern its third national title and its second straight, finishing the season with a dominant 23–1 record. It also allowed the Wildcats to avenge their only loss of the season — a 3–2 defeat to Princeton earlier in the year.
