Olympians' Records Fall as 2024 Sir Walter Miler Sees Record Times
RALEIGH, N.C. โ Unseasonably cool weather led to record-breaking performances in both the Menโs and Womenโs races at this yearโs event, which attracted a large, enthusiastic crowd that cheered and waved signs along the homestretch.
In the Womenโs race, Puma Eliteโs Dorcus Ewoi, continuing a streak of impressive 800-meter performances, won with a Sir Walter Miler-record time of 4:19.71. This time surpassed Nikki Hiltzโs 2022 record of 4:21.89. On Athletics Clubโs Sage Hurta-Klecker closely followed with a personal best of 4:19.89, narrowly missing the 2025 World Championship Standard of 4:19.90. Hurta-Kleckerโs performance ranks as the 7th fastest all-time by an American. New Balance Bostonโs Heather MacLean finished third with a personal best of 4:20.41, making it the 9th fastest all-time by an American.
โThe crowd was incredible tonight; it really gave me the momentum to push through,โ Ewoi told Runnerspaceโs Chris Nickinson after the race. Ewoi also broke the 4:30 barrier in the mile for the first time. โMy goal was to stay with everyone and then kick at the end. And I won!โ
In the Menโs race, Brooks Beasts Track Clubโs Waleed Suliman won with a personal best of 3:51.86, breaking Yared Nuguseโs 2022 record of 3:53.34. Suliman, visibly excited, celebrated his first professional win after three years in the sport. โIt feels really good. Itโs my first win as a pro, and you donโt get many chances to win at this level.โ
Under Armourโs Festus Lagat finished second with a new personal best of 3:52.63, repeating his runner-up position from 2022. New Balance Bostonโs Sam Gilman took third place with the most significant personal best improvement in the field, running 3:52.81 and shaving almost seven seconds off his previous mark of 3:59.21.
