CARY, N.C. – SMU made program history on Sunday, claiming its first-ever ACC Men’s Soccer Championship with a 1–0 victory over top-seeded Virginia at First Horizon Stadium in Cary. The win marks SMU’s first ACC team title in any sport since joining the conference ahead of the 2024–25 season.
Entering the tournament as the No. 7 seed, SMU (11–4–4) tied the 2015 Syracuse squad as the lowest seed to win the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship. With the victory, the Mustangs secured the conference’s automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, which kicks off Thursday, November 20.
The match turned on a decisive moment in the 57th minute. Stephan Soghomonian converted a penalty kick for his team-leading 13th goal of the season and fourth of the tournament — a mark that ties the ACC Championship record.
Defender Slade Starnes was named Tournament MVP for his standout performance throughout the week. He was joined on the 2025 All-Tournament Team by teammates Martin Dominguez, Ryan Clanton-Pimentel, and Soghomonian.
